José María Fonseca has managed to create one of the most substantial wines of Spain using grapes off his own vines, fundamentally of the albariño variety that are then enriched by the addition of loureiro and caiño blanco varieties.

This is the finest Terras Gauda in years. It has gained in strength, complexity and brazenness, which combine to offer a much richer wine on the palate. The acidity manifests itself in a self-evident, adjusted way, and the subtle bitterness and honeyed texture, a product of the very ripe fruit, contribute to the harmony. In brief, an elegant, balanced, nuanced wine that evolves in the mouth, boasting of its fruitiness at every turn.

This albariño has made enormous leaps forward in recent harvests, demonstrating greater aromatic power, more body and a fuller character – gaining in both importance and finish, it emulates Terras Gauda which has been included in this guide since its inception.

Extraordinarily fragrant and complex, the characteristics of the very ripe fruit give the wine an involving, almost honey-like personality that pairs with aromas of bone and a light acidity which affords it a pleasant and lasting freshness. It triggers subtle remembrances of dreams without being clearly identifiable. The palate confirms its sincerity, fruitiness and the grape itself – unmistakably albariño – together with faint sour notes and a certain hint of bitterness.

Deep, complex aromas with rich nuances of smoke and spice over a base of ripe dark fruits like blackberries and plum preserves. It is wide in the mouth, with a long finish, and the fruit and wood are very well resolved, with the former prevailing but leaving room to notice the latter. Sweet, caramelized, with hints of turron: almond and honey combined with the basic elements of acidity, bitterness and a certain tannic quality. It has body and meatiness to it, yet the result is fluid.

Made exclusively from local tinta grapes. Aged in French and American barrels for a period of 18 months. Bottled at the beginning of summer 2003.

A different wine in the way it boasts well-defined organoleptic characteristics, with bitterness clearly standing out due to its elaboration and the ageing process in barrels. Bitter, very subtle, though sharp, unmistakable, with references of toasted notes, coffee and bitter almonds. It is a delicate wine for being a Bordeaux, though it retains the identity that distinguishes between the varieties and the zone.

One of Lafite Rothschild’s wines, classified as “4e cru classé”, but one that disqualifies the qualification ratings. Understand, there are certain truths devised to mislead the laymen. Regardless of what they say on paper, this wine is truly beyond category, capable of questioning and even shattering the official “establishment”. It has everything, the knowledge of a fine winery and the substance of the vines, located at the heart of the quintessential Pauillac.

Elegance, harmony and complexity stand out. Lively red berry compotes with a natural acidity from the ageing process it undergoes. Hints of vegetables alongside leathery notes. Spices, vanilla and toasted nuances. It evolves on the palate at an unbelievable rate, combining multiple, even infinite sensations within its substantial, refined identity.

65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Aged for 18 months in French barrels, 55% of which are new oak.
